The short answer is no; we are not considered discount Real Estate Brokers. However, the long answer (explained below) is sometimes.
There are no industry-wide "standard commission fees." All brokerage representation fees are negotiable. In some instances, we give commission discounts to sellers and buyers who are repeat clients or are employing our firm to both list a home and help find/purchase a new house. While we do not advertise ourselves as a discount REALTOR®, our services are sometimes negotiable depending upon the situation.
We genuinely believe there is room in the market for every type of brokerage business model. However, with discounted fees should most likely come tempered client expectations. There is absolutely a difference when it comes to levels of services between brokerages. How a property is marketed (or isn't marketed) can mean the difference in thousands, and sometimes, hundreds of thousands of dollars either in your favor or out of your pocket. It is very important to compare apples to apples when interviewing potential brokerages.
If you are reasonable about your expectations with the level (or lack thereof) of personal attention, agent availability, and overall "normal" professional services, the discount real estate brokers might be your route. Discount brokerages make their money by doing quantity (a bigger volume of listings). It would be humanly impossible to offer the same level of services to, say, 100 listings as it would be to a significantly smaller number of clients. When you decide it is time to "sell my house," keep in mind "you get what you pay for."
