The city of Westlake was first settled by Charles and Matilda Medlin, who arrived in the area with about 20 other families. They settled along Denton Creek but ended up moving south to avoid flooding. The family's 3-story barn, which was rumored to be a hideout for Sam Bass and Bonnie and Clyde, remained in the area until 1997.

The city didn't become incorporated until 1956 when Dallas lawyer Glen Turner purchased 2,000 acres, and other ranches and homeowners began moving into the area.
