The city of Westlake was first settled by Charles and Matilda Medlin, who arrived in the area with about 20 other families. They settled along Denton Creek but ended up moving south to avoid flooding. The family's 3-story barn, which was rumored to be a hideout for Sam Bass and Bonnie and Clyde, remained in the area until 1997.
