The City of University Park first began developing in 1915. At this time, only a handful of homes were present in this area, and it was considered rural. The Southern Methodist University was responsible for providing these homes and supplied them with utilities until 1924.
Initially, the people living in what is now known as University Park attempted to annex themselves into nearby Dallas and Highland Park. However, the cost to develop sewers and utilities for these homeowners was so high, that the requests were denied.
So, the residents of the city decided to become a city all their own and officially made this decision on April 24, 1924. They quickly elected officials that began the process of building the city and getting the residents the things they needed the most. Because of their efforts, the city of University Park grew to 20,000 by 1945.
Since the 1940s, the city of University Park continues to grow and expand within its borders. Now, it is home to over 24,000 residents and offers many fabulous reasons for being the best city in the area.
