At that time, it began a planned community project with the help of the Department of Housing and Urban Development's New Community program. The construction of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport    in 1974 sparked an era of rapid growth. Flower Mound's population increased from 4,402 to 15,896 between 1980 and 1990.
